Registered: 04/15/08 Posts: 8 Loc: Colorado Cheap Trick played for 45 minutes. Heart played for an hour. Journey started at 9:15pm. The show was great - I was surprised as Journey played for 1 hr 45 mins a full 30 mins beyond the 10:30pm noise ordinance order. Arnel sounded great - he brought tears to my eyes. _________________________ JC Top Reply Quote Quick Reply Quick Quote Notify #120034 - 07/10/08 01:05 AM Re: 7/9/2008 Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre Denver, CO [Re: Chenster69] Anonymous Anonymous Unregistered

Registered: 07/08/08 Posts: 5 Loc: Denver My son and I just got back from the concert. We went with the 5-star VIP package giving us a chance to mingle with other fans before the show. Journey arrived a few minutes after 7:00 and setup to sign autographs, followed by some group photos. We missed the first 10 minutes or so of Cheap Trick, but I don't think anyone minded.
We had great seats (2nd row of the center section), letting us see all of the band members close up.
The Cheap Trick portion lasted about 45 minutes, and they promptly exited right at 7:45. I don't know enough of their songs to provide a set list, I did recognize the mind Police, surrender and the flame.
Heart played several songs I didn't know as well, but among the ones I did know where: Alone, Never, Barracuda, Magic Man, Crazy for You. They did one encore and ended around 9:05
Journey came out around 9:15. They played a shortened version of revelation first, followed by Only the Young. There appeared to be a technical problem with the wiring for Neal's guitar during the first number, the technicians were frantically working on it and Neal did not look happy about it. While they were working it out Jonathan went to the piano and played Send her my love which appeared to be unplanned, but sounded great. After getting everything working, they were able to play Stone in Love.
I don't have a complete set-list but do remember the following songs (not in any particular order):
Revelation Only the Young, Send her My Love Stone in Love Never Walk Away After all these years Change for the Better Wildest Dream Where Did I lose Your Love Wheel in the sky Lights Faithfully Open Arms Who's crying now Be Good to Yourself (Sung by Dean) Seperate ways
I probably missed on or to, hopefully someone else got an actual set list in the proper order.
The entire band played very tight and everyone seemed really relaxed and had fun on stage. Arnel sounds amazing live and was interacted well with the crowd.
Neal played flawlessly on his various solos and seemed to enjoy hamming it up, especially when no noticed a camera on him.
Ross seemed to be having a good time, there were several times where he would make strange faces, which would crack up my 11 year old son.
It was a very enjoyable experience and a good venue to open up the U.S. Tour. It definitely looked sold out, which meant over 18,000 people were in attendance. Arnel performed great. Lots of smiles from him. He told the crowd he was nervous after the second song. But it seemed like the absolutely positive reaction from the crowd put him at ease.
I've been a Journey fan since 1980, but this is the first time I've seen them live. I'm glad I did. I'd highly recommend the show. Top

| CONT>>> Anonymous Unregistered AWESOME SHOW from Journey tonight! We were about 15 rows back in the center and everything was wonderful. Sang about 5 tunes from the new CD (my favorite is "How Did I Lose Your Love") and I was totally excited they sang it. Deen's mike sounded muffled when he sang. No "Mother Father." But, they did sing Edge of the Blade and all the other classics. There was a guitar problem at song #2, so it appears they improvised and did "Send Her My Love" without guitars. It sounded GREAT! Arnel looked WAY more comfortable on stage tonight than he did in the DVD. He had the total rock star moves down (lots of jumping off the drum riser), and HUGE smiles. Everyone appeared to be having a great time... Go see this show - it was freakin' fantastic!!! Top WOW...that's it for now....will post pa ng updates later..!!! | |

| http://www.journeymusic.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=122614&fpart=1It's almost 2 a.m. just got back from the Denver concert. Here's how it went: We all met at the VIP all access entrance and were escorted in by our host Jeff, nice guy! We were able to shop in the merchandise area crowd free, then we were escorted again to the pre-show party area. Although I didn't count, I'd guestimate that there were probably less than 30 people there with 5 star VIP passes. It was hot. There were complimentary drinks and some munchies. We received a journey gift bag with a cool journey beach towel. We were given tickets and some Journey items were raffeled off. Did I mention it was hot? We expected the band to come in at about 6:30ish but that was delayed until a bit after 7. We were all asked to line up with the items we wished to have autographed. The guys came in, sat down and we passed before them and got their autograph. It was very quick. From there they stood up and we were escorted in groups for a quick photo. I got to stand by Jon. He put his arm around me. I had to tiptoe because he is so tall... felt nice! Really nice! While they smiled politely thru all of this, it was clear that this was something they were supposed to do and not necessarily something they felt like doing. Before they were whisked away quickly, I ran up and gave Neal a hug. Don't think I was supposed to do that ... couldn't let him go without holding him once. Sorry, Neal, I just had to! Also nice ... REALLY NICE! I half expected that they would mingle a bit with us, so the fact that they didn't was a bit anticlimactic. We left the pre-show party area and went to our seats. Row 1 ... front and center!!! Oh yeah, this is gonna be good!!!! I won't waste time with telling you about Cheap Trick or Heart. They were OK but that's not why I was there. I was ready for my boys to come on and play. I sat next to Lone Star Journey Girl, she wrote down the set list and will fill you in. Although I have over a dozen Journey concert DVD's, this was my first live Journey concert. They were in rare form! The show started out beautifully with Arnel flying thru the air as expected, singing flawlessly. Arnel is like a hawk! He either soars ever so gracefully or pounces on you with a vengence ... so thrilling! I loved it! After about the first song, Neal experienced technical problems. Sweet little Arnel, innocently announced that there were technical difficulties only to be approached by Jonathan quietly telling him you're not supposed to say that... followed by Arnel shyly saying Oh, I'm not OK. He is adorable! From there Jonathan and Arnel eased into a song sans lead guitar ... meanwhile, Neal's off to the right side of the stage getting repaired. I know Neal wanted to go cordless but unfortunately had to play with cord ... can't imagine that made him too happy ... however ... before long he was cordless and roaming the stage like he used to! Arnel made gentle eye contact, reached out and you felt him embrace you with his passionate enthusiasm. Being in the front row the acoustics were a bit off but the trade off of having the guys playing right to you was worth it. The emotional exchange between us felt staggering. I was one in 17,000 but there were moments where he made me feel like the only one there. Arnel brought me to tears with After All These Years and Open Arms. The heartfelt emotion in his voice and in his face was not something I expected to see or feel. Only Perry could do that. Ross was ... well ... crazy Ross. He played with the crowd and was a joy to watch. Jon came out from behind the piano and played from time to time. He did a cool harmonica bit that was kinda funky ... I liked it. Dean played is but off and took over some vocals giving Arnel a break ... amazing voice ... always wondered why he wasn't out front. Neal, ahh, my Neal! Masterful as ever. Tickles those strings giving me shivers up my spine! What else can you do with those finger??? Sorry, went off track. Neal has also mastered the personal exchange with the crowd making you feel like he's playing only for you. He smiles. He makes eye contact. What blows me away is how he can just play so agressively while he's roaming the stage and interacting with the other guys. A true master. I had a blast and can honestly say that the only thing wrong with the night was that it was too short. They should NEVER have agreed to share the stage. They would have filled the venue on their own. It was awsome! Thank you guys for such a wonderful evening! | |

| It's 9 am the next day ... had time to take it all in. Deep breath!
Did I mention that Arnel poured himself into tight little leather (front lace-up) pants ... My, my, my sweet Jesus! He's so solid!
He played to the cameras with hilarity thashing his hair about fiercely then laughing at himself. What a character! Funny, he seemed so quiet and polite at the meet and greet(but then they were all for the most part kinda quiet)
His stage persona is really fun to watch. Without using words he's screaming "I'm onstage with JOURN-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!!!!!!!!!" You can tell he seems sooooooooo happy to be where he is ... I'm sure he fears he's going to wake up any minute.
I got the feeling that Neal and the guys get a kick out of him too. When you watch Neal play onstage, occasionally there's the raised eyebrow smile that he gives to the crowd that says "yeah, that bit felt good, did you like it too?" and then there's the smile, the exchange of glances between he and Ross, or he and Jon, the eyes closed shaking his head smile that says "Arnel is a f@#kin maniac, can you believe this guy!"
While Arnel did classic Journey songs beautifully, it was the new stuff, that, in my opinion, brought him to true Rock Star status. Sorry, I can't help but make the comparison to Perry. I love Perry still and nothing will ever change that. I know so many others there felt the same way. This may haunt Arnel. I hope not. He was embraced by the crowd.
At one point he asked the crowd "Are you havin' fun?" Cheers rang loud. "Do you like me?" Cheers rang equally loud ... "Thats good, I like you too!" A seemingly spontaneous question ... but clearly one he should ask each time. The affirmation is important! Good for you AP!
I'm looking forward Revelation and Beyond .... when Arnel/Journey have as many new hits, then they can ease up on playing the old stuff ... Naaaaaaaaa, what am I saying, he mastered the classics with finesse ... Perry would be proud to see his children embraced so graciously.
Am I glad I went? Absolutely. Will I go if they come back, you betcha!

| Linda has the set list and took some pics. Unfortunately, I only had my phone. The stills are blurry.
As for the crowd reaction to the new stuff ... Amazing! I turned around to look at the faces and reactions (I was curious about that too!) and I was amazed to see not only cheering but people mouthing the words like they'd known them for years.
For a moment it reminded me of the cult following that Depeche had in the 80's. In the beginning, Depeche's music didn't get much air time, just an underground following that spread like wildfire. It was incredible!
I was surprised that they did as many new songs as they did ... but then why not, that's exactly what they should've done ... they were on tour promoting their new album! Guess it wasn't what I expected but am pleased all the same. I wished they'd have played Sunshower ... my favorite on the album.
There are so many songs on the new album that hold their own live in concert, consistant to the classic Journey sound. (LOL) My husband, (not really a journey fan) while clearly recognizing the old stuff, would lean down and ask, is this old or new? His question was in a sense declaring that the songs from Revelation sound like the classics. What a noble compliment to Journey.
I'm glad everyone has given positive feedback about my post. In the days to come, I'm sure I'll remember more and will share with you. What a night!

| My ears are still hurting, but it was absolutely worth it. One of the best overall shows I've seen, and I've been to a bunch.
Cheap Trick was great, way too short of a set, Heart was excellent, but Journey owned that packed house. It is as full as I've see Fiddler's since a Van Halen concert there way back when.
I had seats 8 rows off the right side of the stage, where Neal was camped out. Also some of the best seats I've had in a while too.
I'm one of those hardcore Steve Perry fans, however, Arnel's story was compelling and his ability is off the charts. I knew that going in, and had watched the Vegas show in the Revelation DVD. He was even better live. He looks far more comfortable with the band than on the DVD and he really worked the crowd.
Some rough technical difficulties with Neal over the first 15-minutes of the show, I was close enough to hear him drop an F-bomb over the frustration - yet, once they got it fixed, he was awesome.
I'm out of superlatives, I can't say enough good things to match how much I enjoyed seeing Journey play. It was all part of an anniversary present for my wife (hitched 21 years as of Friday) and she had not seen them live since 1981.
Thanks for the welcomes!
It has really been fun to be a Journey fan again, with all the buzz, the big tour and the Revelation CD/DVD set.
A couple side bits to the show, Ticketmaster had actually cancelled my order, without notification. All I did was go to print them out and poof, they were gone. They did try to fix it, but the show was sold out by the time it got figured out.
So, I found a very reasonable ticket broker at the very last minute, who got us seats 10 rows closer to the stage, in the exact same section. Is that some good Journey karma or what?
I am glad we were just out of Arnel's reach, because my wife is completely in love with the guy now.
Another thing about Neal in the show, that really stood out to me. I've never seen anyone so focused before, live on stage. So many distractions, crowd noise, those technical diffulties, etc. and yet, he was far more concerned about the effort he was putting in. It is kind of hard to explain. He took some time along the way to enjoy the crowd and the band, but I've seen a bunch of concerts and he was an absolute - professional, making sure he the sound was there and he was hitting at an extremely high level.
I hope I am making sense, I just thought it was extremely cool...
It isn't to say everyone else was off their game, everyone was great, but Neal's intensity (maybe that is the word I need) was impressive.

| http://www.journeymusic.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=120017&fpart=3Hey all, first post here! I went to the concert last night with 3 other folks and we universally had an awesome time!! Could NOT believe how good the band sounded with Arnel. I'm a Journey fan from 20+ years ago, and I had watched the YouTube videos of the band's Rio concert and knew Arnel's story...but it was nothing compared to the live thing. Arnel infuses Journey with a shot of energy! He was so excited the entire time, but there were a few times I thought he might fall right off the stage into the crowd! His voice was amazing...not one bum note...and it is HARD to sing outdoors in Denver for that long and he did a lot of it while moving all over the stage. He did tremendous!! Journey is awesome!! | |

| I have a few more coming; just go HERE. SW is up; CFTB, WCN, WDILYL and WD need to be prepared and uploaded still. Some off-the-record comments about the UNBELIEVABLE show that would benefit our giddy folk: There's a famous respectable pelvic thrust in Stone in Love. Also, during the bowing, Arnel takes off his jacket and steps on a riser between - and a head higher than - the other guys. While everyone goes wild with applause, Arnel proceeds to gesture as though he's pulling down his leather pants. It was hilarious, not obnoxious at all. Final words were by Arnel, "We'll be back!" | |

| http://www.chessmoron.com/Chessmoron/send.movHi all, I'm F4BBEST on YouTube and managed to record some clips from the Denver concert. What I realized is that "Send Her My Love" might become rare as we all now know it doesn't come with guitar accompaniment. I was surprised with the overwhelming amount of PMs I got about this particular clip. It cannot be enjoyed fully via some crappy flash YouTube file; it needs to be seen in as close a manner as the real thing (not gonna happen, but we can try). I have some bandwidth but my best friend came through and gave me some more. He has enough to probably last for a while. I abhor free online storage facilities, so won't do yousendit.com, for example. The movie file is compressed, but it should be good enough at least for viewing, and maybe to burn onto a DVD. You will need Quicktime to view it; and to download the clip itself, just right click and save. At 1:19, you will notice the audio fail. For the techies, I've attempted to fix with Peak, after I demuxed the read-only compact camera file, and before I authored with Final Cut: no-go. I can't enjoy this clip if I keep it for myself, so run away with it! I have no doubt there will be many more recordings of this song sung live through the tour, but keep this guitar-less one for your own archive. Some footnotes: Arnel starts with a confession about being nervous. At no time during the whole show did this feeling realize itself overtly. He KILLED Denver. I thank the couple in front of me who was stoic the whole show, allowing me to get some good shots. They bought several Revelation albums (I was nosy and could see their shopping bag) and there were only 50 units available for sale; so I know it wasn't because they didn't enjoy the show. They're just cool that way. I'd like to tell the guy sitting behind Mr. fabbest he's lucky the Mr. didn't pull him by his collar and yell "SHUT THE F UP!". Mr. Hotshot did a lick-by-lick SP-AP "not the same way SP did it" comment. Glad Mr. told me this AFTER the fact. I'd like to tell Mr. Fabbest thank you for assuming recording duties when I couldn't help anymore but dance, i.e., WDILYL. GOOD TRY, hon - but a steady hand and very little wide-tight focus changes is the way to go! I'd also like to tell Neal that without the guitar is not necessarily better, just different. You and your guitar are indispensable elements of Journey. | |

| Bea: Do you mean Happineda™ ? I wish I can claim to be the recipient of the smile, but a 5-Starrer owns it. Fess up, whoever you are! And to the person who asked me to explain my comment about Arnel's "fantastic face": I could remember when he sang his first line, "So young in love, they couldn't wait" - he started mellow, with a slight bop, while the wind blew his hair, all caught on the big screen. Fantastic. By the way, I'll take this opportunity to add a little observation post-concert. While 17,000 were making their way out of the amphitheater, at least about 3 groups (mostly teens/young adults) broke out into song: DSB and AYWI. Was cool. | |
