A Perry-Less Journey: They Can Still Rock
ADVERTISEMENt

http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/jul/31/me-a-perry-less-journey-they-can-still-rock/

By CURTIS ROSS

The Tampa Tribune

Published: July 31, 2008

TAMPA - The bill could have had one wondering what year it was, but a crowd of around 15,000 - and not all of them grizzled concert vets like yours truly - braved the rain to rock with Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick on Wednesday night at Ford Amphitheatre.

For headliner Journey, the tour is a chance to show off new singer Arnel Pineda, a Steve Perry sound-alike discovered on YouTube.

Pineda's story all but demands that VH1 resurrect "Behind the Music," but the more pressing musical question Wednesday was whether he could handle former Journey front man Steve Perry's vocals.

The answer, in a word: yes. In a few more words: One wonders what a comparison of Perry's and Pineda's DNA would reveal. The vocal resemblance is that uncanny.

Of course it wasn't all Pineda's show. Guitarist Neal Schon's chops were a reminder that Journey began as a prog-rock and fusion-leaning quartet.

He, bassist Ross Valory, keyboardist-guitarist Jonathan Cain and drummer Deen Castronovo were spot-on with the harmonies that give their music so much of its sheen.

With all due respect to Pineda's pipes, the strongest vocals of the evening belonged to Heart's Ann Wilson.

Playing second, she displayed a voice that has lost nothing, and maybe gained something in the way of nuance, in the 32 years since the band hit radio with "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man."

Both of those numbers were part of Wednesday's set, as were '80s hits such as "Alone" and "Heaven." But it was on The Who's "Love Reign o'er Me" that Wilson claimed the vocal crown.

One wonders if Roger Daltrey himself could match the performance Wilson gave on the tune, the dramatic closer of The Who's 1973 rock opera "Quadrophenia." It was an ideal choice for the evening, its music and lyrics capturing the tension of an impending storm.

When Wilson hit the high notes, it sounded like the clouds letting loose with a torrent of raw emotion.

Opening the evening, Cheap Trick seemed positively casual, perhaps due to playing on singer and Bay area resident Robin Zander's home turf. The band gained power throughout its 40-minute set, with "If You Want My Love" and "I Can't Take It" sounding especially fresh.

All 3 bands were great tonight, I can't say enough about Heart and journey INCREDIBLE!!! That said the Ford Amphitheatre's sound was bad, REAL BAD!!! I could not tell which drum Dean was hitting?? You absolutly could not hear his kick drum or his tom's! The same goes for Heart......There seem's to be NO BOTTOM!! Ross Valory's bass was mud! Journey is just a fantastic band, one of the best I have ever seen. I will always go see them when they come to florida........just not at the Ford Amphitheatre...........

What a night in Tampa! Journey finally came and rocked the Ford amphitheater. CT was already playing when we got there. The audio was a little too loud that sometimes you could hardly hear some of their vocals but otherwise good. they were followed by the Heart with the Wilson sisters, they were good too specially when they sang "Alone". I don't think it was sold out but it was about 90% full and I heard that it has a capacity of 20,000. People of all ages and race were there. One of the guys behind us were arguing whose the better singer, SP or AP. One of the guys said he has heard of AP but hasn't seen him perform yet then a little later in the show, he said " awesome ! He is a much better performer than SP and how old is he? He can't believe that he's 40. Oops! sorry AP. slipped of the tongue. And when Arnel said he dedicated the Don't stop believing to his 25 years of struggle in Manila. The whole crowd gave him a standing ovation. It was a great show and the crowd was wanting them to go on and on and on and never walk away but West palm fans are waiting Faithfully with Open arms. What a show!!! Don't miss it!

P.S. wish they had play What it takes to Win for our Sports Teams.

I as well have never really followed Journey...I like their songs alot, but never really followed the group since they started way back in the 70's.

With Pineda doing leads now, and with my Filipino wife how could I not be a fan now, hehehe...I love them to death man, they are truly the happening thing right now in music...!!I hope to see them at the music awards next time walking off with a winner!

Kudo's to Neil and the band for giving AP the opportunity to shine...! Man I love that guy! He was superb in Houston last Saturday...! Pooy guy worked his fannie off in the sweltering heat. Before it was over he was down to just his T-Shirt and pants, haha....And his shoe strings kept coming loose, hehehe

Rock n Roll forever dudes..!

Loc: Cocoa, Florida Review in detail later. Mini review now:

Anyone who is worried that Cheap Trick, Heart or Journey cannot rock the house like they did in the 1970's and Journey more so in the 1980's is grossly mistaken. The house is a rockin' so don't bother knockin'. The baracuda is wailing on the guitar as Ann Wilson belts out the hits. And Arnel with Journey is Journey on fire. This was an excellent show to say thr least at this hour after 4 hours sleep.

Posts: 3 Please forgive me, but I just pulled an all-nighter driving back to Tallahassee from the Tampa show...needless to say, I'm running on fumes right now. I have to agree with the sound issues at the venue- CT was poorly mixed and blaring loud (they still managed to put on a great set- didn't take themselves too seriously...very entertaining) Heart-I thought the sound was fine (maybe I was oggeling over Nancy and not paying attention-she's still smokin hot!!!!!) On to Journey- Arnels mic volume was far too loud the first couple of tunes- very frusterating to listen to. I thought that the rest of the guys were pretty well mixed (I'm not a sound expert though). It took far to long for the engineers to fix Arnel's volume...once they did, he sounded great. Anyway, I'm toast right about now. I'll give a better review later on. P.S. Far too many empty seats in great locations- I'm ashamed to call myself a Floridian today- first non-sellout of the tour.

We had an awesome time as well.....the rain finally stopped, just in time!! Everyone was great. Lighting was annoying in our area, blinding at times. We could not see the big screen behind the band and the side screens were not utilized. ???? AP is just what they needed, everyone in the band seemed 're-charged' and had big smiles on their faces as the crowd reacted to their performance. We love you Journey....looking forward to our next visit!!
